Description

Experience a journey through time and discover the rich history of Antioquia’s first capital, a city that predates Medellín by over 400 years. Once inhabited by Spaniards and Europeans, this ancient town is steeped in fascinating stories waiting to be explored. From its cobbled streets to its majestic buildings, Antioquia’s first capital is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a taste of Colombia’s vibrant past.

To get there, we’ll embark on a scenic  50 minutes’ drive, from Medellin, through the magnificent Andean mountains, starting from the altitude of 4500 feet in Medellin, ascending to over 7000 feet before descending to 1200 feet.

You’ll arrive to the town through the Western tunnel, one of the largest and most advanced infrastructure in Latin America. As you stroll the narrow streets of the city center, you will learn a lot about its history, and discover the amazing architecture that has been built in the 16th century! One of the main highlights is the visit of the Juan Del Corral Museum. You will be able to see a collection of documents, works of colonial art, as well as ethnographic and archaeological artifacts.

Admire the Neoclassical and Baroque architecture of the Metropolitan Cathedral, built with an astonishing 1,120,000 bricks; which was declared a National Monument in 1959.

On your way back to Medellin, just 10 minutes away from the Santafé De Antioquia town, you will visit the famous Puente de Occidente (Western Bridge), which is located over the Cauca River. The works for that bridge were projected by the famous Engineer José María Villa, who also took part in the design and construction process of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.  The Western Bridge was built in the end of the 19th century and its made of wood. The bridge is a UNESCO world heritage site and a must-visit!
